Monday, Oct 15, 1849, New York Herald Afternoon Edition. 4pp complete. 21 ½ x 15 1/4. Front page report, 3/4 column, on the trip of the Manhattan Company to the Gold Mines via the Overland Passage, and the hardships encountered, on reaching California, and ends with the writer stating he leaves for the diggings the next day. Also included is articles of gold discoveries; San Francisco, and news of the coining of gold in California. Describes the minting of a coin in gold; "similar to the U.S. coin, and of standard mint value often dollars. It corresponds perfectly in size, shape, and color, with the U. S. coin of the same denomination, bearing the thirteen stars on an exquisitely sculptured head of the goddess of liberty, on which is inscribed "Moffatt & Co., 1849,"and on the reverse a spread eagle, with the letters S.H.V., i.e. Standard Hint Value, and the words, * California Gold Dollar".
